i don't want a career
i got enough to deal with here

everytime i have to go looking for i job i get nervous. i have always managed to find a job but it has been to my amazement each time. i generally do whatever job to the best of my abilities i am not saying i am a model employee but work is work and i do what i can to keep from getting fired. usually a little more. i have walked out on jobs and i have been fired from jobs but it was for things that were not in my control. those stories will be told some other day. since i am eventually going to have to find another job, i thought i would try to put together a resume of sorts. mostly skills that are unmarketable for whatever reason. someday i will finish school so that i have a real career path set up. not all of this has always been true, but it usually is.

when i was younger and had a much stronger stomach i worked as a microbiology lab assistant. from this i learned how to handle bodily fluids without contaminating them or me. after doing several of them that were hiv positive, i learned that i will quickly discard my fears to get the job done. but i will also take a necessary precautions to stay safe. i also learned very basic data entry. since i had access to the medical records of hundreds, if not thousands, of people i also had to become aware of privacy issues.

also early on, my first job in fact, i worked as a janitor. this taught me how to use cation when using industrial cleaners. it also put me unsupervised into offices containing lots of expensive, fragile equipment. so respect for personal and company property. of course i also learned how to use the sweeper while i was sitting on it.

the third job i had at that particular medical complex was as a valet. this is where i learned most of my customer service skills. i was never rude to anyone just because i was in a hurry. short but not rude. i also learned how to drive just about anything with four wheels. this job required driving so many different qualities and models of vehicles in all kinds of weather that i got pretty good at driving in general. if i was going to be driving a jag on a sheet of ice, i better be good at it. i also learned to accept frequent the deaths of people that came in every day. not like it but accept. with that also came dealing with people that were on edge. i am not saying i like it but i can do it. it was here that i learned that i could pop the lock on a mid 70's gm in under 30 seconds.

working at subway, i had no choice but to learn inventory and cost control. i had to do the paperwork every time i closed. i was never that good at math but that is what a calculator if for. i would do it multiple times to make sure it was right. i also learned a different set of customer service skills. again, i was usually without any kind of supervision. but i did well enough that i had keys and safe combinations to both of the owners stores. not even his wife had that. i also learned to train quickly and correctly. the quick i did it the less i had to do. the more correctly i did it, the less i would hear about it later. i did not have the title but i basically acted in a managerial role.

from the current job i have learned how to drive a forklift and pallet jack pretty damn well. data entry and shipping and receiving also come into play. once i went light duty i also had to do quite a bit of date entry. the part that is really scary is that i also learned to drive a tractor trailer. can't back them up for shit, but i can get them from point a to point b.

doing zine stuff for so many years forced me to learn several things to different degrees. i got no training on any of it so i had to learn the hard way. i had to learn a bit about marketing and advertising. never did muck of it but i could if need be. i had to learn some communication and diplomacy skills to get what i needed from whoever had it. i had to learn layout and design to make things look the way i wanted them too. there was a lot of stuff in there that i can't even account for. there might be some talent involved in a lot of it, but mostly i had to learn by trial and error. the school of hard knocks.

doing the zine stuff, as well as the web stuff, required a lot of writing. i write a lot of stuff that probably doesn't mean a damn thing but that's just the way it is. i have never considered myself a write and take some offense to the fact that some people seem to think i am one. i have nothing against writers. there are just several reasons why i do not think i am one. first, i don't make money off my writing, and i don't think i could. i write to get the ideas across, not to make money. i have tried writing for money and did not like it. i also think that my writing is not on a level that anyone would pay for. that is just a minor point. i don't take most of my writing serious enough to do anything with it.

over the years i have learned a few things about computers. i would not mind working with them but i don't know that i want them to be a primary part of the job. it is unlikely that would ever happen since most of my knowledge about them is personal experience and undocumented. eventually i will get my act together and get my certifications. i will still not have any documented training but i will have the papers that prove that i know my shit.

aren't exactly one and the same

in the above list i mentioned that i had tried writing for money. one of those times it came down to a very serious matter. as i said, i do not take my writing all that serious, but i do expect the credit when i deserve it. while living in carbondale, il, i started writing for this little entertainment paper they were trying to build up. generally i told them what i was going to write about and then i got $25 for each piece they printed. i waited until i saw each one in print before i bothered them about payment. so i told them i was going to write a piece on 24 places for 24 hour people. it was basically a matter of sitting down and putting it on paper. a fluff piece, but no more than you would expect from a college town entertainment paper. once i got it done i handed it to a couple of my roommates to read over. they might think of something i had missed. everything was pretty much covered so at 2am i walked my no-so-sober ass over and turned it in. it was close to deadline so one of the editors was there working on stories. i asked him where to put it and then went back home.

when the issue came out, i was all excited. i looked through it as quick as i could trying to find my piece. i went past it the first time because there was a big problem with it. my name wasn't on it. the name of one of the editors was on it. so i headed over to the office to find out what was going on. could have been a mistake. once i got there i was told that they had already paid the girl whose name was on it so i needed to talk to her. so i walked very quickly to where she lived. and she was home. i asked her what the deal was and she completely denied having any idea what i was talking about. i was livid to the point that i couldn't talk any more. so i left with a fuck you and a door slam. it was intentional. those were my words and i had to way to prove it. i had done one of the dumbest things i could have and did not keep a copy for myself. i had turned in the original and only copy. she couldn't have written that story if she had to, because she did not live it. so all i could do was bitch about it. and i still am. but if i ever see her fucking name in print again i will let everyone know about it. it is a name i will never forget. i don't care if other people use my stuff, i just want the credit for it.

if you are feeling nice and want to send me cd with the following songs on it, i would be greatly appreciated. matter of fact, if you really want to put these and whatever mp3's you want on one, that would be nice. mp3's are preferred so that i don't have to reincode the stuff. and for the record, i do own legal copies of all of these but since i don't have my music handy i am in need of help here. eventually i will have to find karaoke* cd's with these songs, but you know. i am still trying to find a place that sells the rem one. dammit.
