Quilt For Need
Jan. 6th, 2010 11:31 pmsince the cold and broke are at hand... i had this idea some time ago but i dont think i ever spelled it out. i know its not a new idea as such but that is no reason that it cant be workable.
basically getting sewing circles to makes quilts for the homeless and needy. and i mean the homeless sleeping on the street in the middle of winter that no one wants to think about. needy is a more open ended term but truely needy. not greedy.
i think there should be two sizes - one for smaller children and one for adults. i have the pattern in my head if someone wants to help try to work it out and make a pattern that is easily shareable in mutiple formats.
all materials (except thread) must be recycled. be it from your own closets dives or from thrift stores or what not. quilt top can be pretty much any materials available. pading would be one or two good thick blankets and the bottom would be a sheet.
each quilt would be marked very clearly that they are not to be sold under any circumstance and should instead be donated to a needy person or family or a group that can get it to one.
these should not be associated with any particular group organization or church. though all are welcome to get the groups together. basically of the people by the people. as such they could also be used as a teaching lesson by sewing/home ec classes etc.
if you have people interested in helping that (like myself) dont know how to or cant sew there are various jobs that they can still do. rounding up materials, making sure they are clean, ripping seams, cutting squares, supply runs, and final delivery. or one person can do it all themselves if they so choose.
at the point of delivery there sould be a removable card attached that has the name of the group and/or the names of all individuals that worked on it. doesn have to be anything fancy. it can be a note card attached with a safety pin. or it could be a greeting card with a few dollars in it. if individual names are used the seamtress gets top billing.
obviously there are still some issues that open for discussion but thats the basics until i get the pattern made.
and these dont have to be given just at christmas or what have you. give them out as you get them done. covering is needed in the summer as much as the winter. in the summer it might cover the concrete to more comfortable to sleep on.
