From: Hiram Hiller
Like nearly everyone else immediately affected by the evacuation, we find ourselves on a Gilligan' s Island vacation. We packed for a couple of days trip and now literally own nothing but what we brought. Working forty eight years for three clean pairs of socks just ain't worth the effort.
Again, like everyone else we know, we have been glued to the television set in hopes of seeing ones we know, or our house. Today we finally saw what we think is day or two old footage of the 2700 block of Napoleon Avenue with three feet of water against the buildings, which means we figure on at least one foot of standing water downstairs in the house.
We care little about the house, figuring we can fix anything with insurance money and a lot of time. We have already lined up a contractor/carpenter to come back with us to get the work started. The competition for materials and labor is going to be nuts as you can imagine.
Our concern is, and will always, remain the safety of friends and loved ones. My kitchen manager, Moe, was last seen sitting in our living room with our dog Tullie. Plans were made for a Tuesday return, that it turns out we could have made if the media information was better. I will always kick myself for not having gone back when there was time and making a second trip just for the two of them--but then who knew? Moe is insulin dependent, so he must be self-medacating by now, and he is far too loyal to Tullie to allow himself to be evacuated without her. We left him with about fifteen gallons of water and twenty five gallons of fuel for the generator, and an AR-15 with four thirty round clips (so we really only worry about his physical health). All efforts at directing help to him seem to have fallen short so far, but we are in touch with a better network of contacts with Karen's mother so we may still rescue the pair. We appreciate Kim and Jeremy serving as the air traffic controllers of the staff and letting me know who is where. At this point, Leroy, Ms. Mary, Mary Ann, and Jackie remain unaccounted for but presumed to be in town as well. Neptune and I spoke Monday afternoon about the time the eyewall passed, and after days of not being able to get through I reached his voice-mail today -- which indicates he is out of New Orleans.
While we all have unexpected time on our hands, anyone coming towards northeast Missouri should come on by. My cellphone has no service here, but we can be reached by landline.
