empallinok i don't watch what you would call a lot of television. i like the ideas of it better than i like the real thing. but when i do watch it i want one of two things. to be entertained or to be educated. if i am lucky i will get both. so that brongs up the problem of these so called reality shows.
the early ones kept it short and sweet and tested you on a few basic facts. the dating game tested the players on how quickly they could impress the bait. the newlywed game tested how much each couple actually knew about each other. no the prizes were not amazing but descent enough for the time invested by the players.
eventually this basic idea leads to the torture that was mtv's the real world and road rules. these required the players to spend way too much time together and complete tasks ranging from charity work to bungee jumping while keeping to a previously signed contract that said they had to basically do what mtv told them to. the closet either of these shows got to reality was when they kicked someone off the real world for what basically amounted to insults against their "good taste."
so that brings us to the current mess of these shows. for the potential each one of these shows has it has more and bigger problems. so excuse me while a pick on a few.
survivor had some potential to really challange people but the dont really have to survive on anything other than how well they can backstab each other. the challanges are interesting to a degree but there is more time spent on the drama. sure the shark bite thing was interesting. well it was until you saw the size of the shark. then it was just sad as all hell. show me a version where all of the contestants are handicapped and/or retarded and how much they have to go through to0 survive life in any normal city and that i will watch. but that would be good television.
american idol has the potential to expose the country to some really talented musicians but they instead choose to smash the hopes most of the ones who do have talent. they have told so many people that they sing horrible that have a great voice for jazz or blues or r&b or what ever. let me see the rap version of this. the complain that the contestants are playing it safe but they are the one who consistantly pick the same shit over and over and over. sure america gets to vote but look at the choices they are given and the age range of most of the people voting. and am i the only one who is trying to figure out why they would have a choreographer (paula abdul) judging singing talent.
for those with cable you can watch sci-fi's attempt at this, mad mad house. throw a bunch of people in a house with 5 people, "alts", who are just too weird that the normal people will get all freaked out. sure just about everything is wrong with this one so i am just going to pick on the alts by the title the show has given them.
modern primative - probably the coolest of the bunch. least influenced by living in CA.
wiccan - i have never seen a wiccan with a boob job before. not near as flakey as most supposed wiccan either. but a lot more flakey than the real thing.
naturalist - basically a wiccan that likes to run around in the nude. seems like a nice enough guy though.
voodoo priestess - needs to have more dead chickens and the like. more fake religion stuff.
vampire - LMFAO! :-| LMFAO!
as for the wedding shows...go read this. it was covered better there than i ever could do but hits on all the points.
just give me my cops and techtv and ill be happy. maybe.
