youtube vs viacom = lets make a deal

all of these people who are going off about privacy issues involved in the youtube v viacome case have it all wrong. in this case no matter who says what it all comes down to ratings. viacom could give a rats ass about who has uploaded what. they want the data and all of you have suddenly become nielsen families.

via court order viacom has forced google to hand over full viewer data across the youtube site. however out of so called privacy concerns they have agreed to accapt the information without login or ip data. its advertising for their shows and the fact that anyone will watch this crap at such low quality in a market that

soon they will start data mining the information for stats on all of the shows that broadcast on all of the networks they own. eh movies as well but that is a minor aside. then they will start comparing real numbers from real data.

it is common knowledge that the nielsen family concept is screwed in the same way the electoral college is screwed. but more so. the few represent the many. however in the case of the electoral college the electoral votes do sort of represent the choice of the general public in each set district. nielsen families are selected from a pool of people who thought it would be cool to have every channel they watch monitered. which more that likely covers a very small sampling of the demographic that viacom networks generally cater to.

now they will have real numbers and they will assume maybe 1% of viewers will watch a clip more than once but will in turn talk to at least five people about the clips they like. but since they will have access to all views and not just the ones from the networks thy own they will be able to completely clean house.

play along for a minute. lets assume they take the list of shows they own and find that beavis and butthead and spongebob both outrank southpark but adultswim chumps both of them. so they cancel south park and start running adult swim more often. then they find that smurfs getting more views than any of those. so they try to get that running on a couple of networks. then they find no one has watched any of the mtv shows they have uploaded but the views on music videos are off the chart. suddenly emptyv is showing videos again. mtv2 is changed to a cartoon for adults network and suddenly tv just got better.

all is good. what happens when further digging pulls up lolcatz collages getting better rankings than any of the crap they put up out? no one really ownz that so they are suddenly in yer meme making it a cartoonz. what of all the ratings that some of the really good weekly shows that are getting massive ratings? thats when the checkbooks come out.

since they own atomfilms which how shall we say sucks. sucks in usage terms. they will look at some of the shorts that people have put together and we might actually get a few original movies out of the deal. question is will they hire the people responsible for the ideas or just steal it right out from under them because it is cheaper to pay a court settlement then it is to pay royalties and residuals?

this is all opinion and theory that will either be proved or not in very short time. i am not saying its a good thing but nor do i think the result will be half as evil as the means. its also very disorganised so i hope i got the main ideas across. doubt it but lets pretend.

what is going to hurt them is that they are only getting views and not search data. at least as far as i can tell from the coverage.

viacom networks and other media brands are listed at www.viacom.com/ourbrands/medianetworks/Pages/default.aspx. however this list is missing brands that it doeas not have controlling interest in. even if the amount they hold is enough to sway board votes and such. also not included are any private holdings by board members.
