last week we went to several museums in the downtown area. old and new. it was the first time i had been to iao since circa 1989. way too long for me. and we went through the mail art show in the underground [recent name change. formally the concourse.] and in every case i looked at it and asked my self why i was not doing this. but then i am. i burned out during a bad situation about the head a number of years ago. then i started working on cheese ball prefab stuff from stores to try and re light the spark. it seems to be working a little better.
well as we were walking around i picked a thing for an open call but the due date was last friday. i could have done it with more time but for what they were wanting it was just going to be a big mess if i tried. maybe next time. then i saw a thing for the 24 hour video race. you get your cues at midnight and you/your team have 24 hours to come up with 5 minutes or less using assigned cues. 24 hours from start to entry. and you had to register before you got the cues. this had my name on it. rushed video rushed. so i did it because i wouldnt have time to think about backing out of it. though i did wait til the absolute last minute to register.
now what happens? well the winners are going to be announced at a showing on feb 28th at the philbrook in tulsa. no i do not think i will be there. then there will be some other showings before it makes it to the iao here in oklahoma city. i probably will not go to that except to try and get my tape back. and destroy it. what they have is the master and only copy. unchecked because i ran out of time. this is why there is not a fancy link to it somewhere in here. i might redo it properly since i still have all of the pieces. but i really have no desire to see what i actually submitted.
part of me wants to go to see the others. part of me is all 'its a museum showing'. that really should seem cooler than it is. in a case like this it looks good on paper but the reality is the whole showing by default of submission isnt a proper way to do it. with the exception of the winners. since all entries will be shown. if it were a juried show where not all entries are selected it would be one thing. it will actually matter to me when its an invitational show. yes i think i can get to that point. any one can with a little bit of push and shove in the right directions. maybe some day. but dont bet on it.
anyway id rather either keep or give most of the stuff i do. not that many people ever see that much of any of the pieces i actually finish. over time a lot have just been left behind in moves. i suppose it is because of this that i happy that the one piece i did in high school that everyone wanted ended up in a safe place. if memory serves me well it did actually end up getting framed even. on that one i might steal it some day to get prints made but for now its best that its away form me. i do have one of the trial runs of that same item but mine is wrinkled from being wadded up untrimmed unmatted folded up and hidden away in a box. and i like that thing but i like it out of site. oh but i do have a slide of that one and the rest from that time. so i am wondering if i can do prints from that instead. nevermind anyway.
