the sumer between my 8th and ninth grade years my sisters and i spent a good part of the summer at my mothers house. we were in theory supposed to stay with her permantly but that is no where near how it ended up turning out. most of the time my older sister stayed with a friend of hers but that did little to relieve the stress on the other four people staying in this very small one bedroom apartment. it was in reality a small two car garage converted into an apartment.

i took the first chance i could to go spend some time away when my aunt came to visit. i packed as quickly as i could and hitched a ride to waco to stay with her and my uncle. over the years i spent several chunks of summers at there house in longdale, ok. there was always somthing interesting bound to happen. things that would burn into my memory. one year i ate fried frog legs. i wouldnt do it again but thay really werent that bad. one year they had a pag and chickens that layed mutlicoloured eggs - think pink and green instead of brown and white. one years an small plane crashed into the tree tops maybe a mile down the road. one year i caught a gar and since it was the biggest fish i had ever caught (a record that still stands) i was insistant on eating it. since it is basically impossible to debone them i was advised against it. but i still tried. after maybe two bites i gave up. one year i got the holy bejebus scared out of me by an album cover.

i stared at this giant robot covered in blood holding these bodies like a dear in headlights. had nightmares about that off and on for years. and no it wasnt the album cover that scared me so much as the idea of giant attacking robots. some years later after telling tqoatig about this incident she surprised me with a copy of it that she picked up at a thrift store.

so at this point a few of might be prone to think that something interesting happed while in waco tx. well yes it did but no it wasnt that. i am much to old for that one. my uncle had worked in the oil industry for years and at this point was trusted with a company truck and all the thousands of dollars of equiptment that went with it. well we took this truck to go run some errands one evening and this one piece of equiptment caught my attention that i asked about a thousand questions about it. so when we got back to the house he dialed the access code and his home number and let me say hello to my aunt. my first use of a portable phone. more specifically a car phone. and to put a finer point on it...a...wait for it...no really wait for it...a rotary car phone. it was as much of oddity in 1985 as it would be now but for completely different reasons. things had to start somwhere and at something like $12 a minute i feel a little privileged to have had the chance to actually use one.
