so i was looking over my list of things to post about that has been untouched for a very long time and exhibit a caught my attention. most notes that i write concerning exhibit a more often than not have it labeled as project hell. working title verses descriptive title. it used to be called a documentation of insanity but that took too much effort to write. basically it is to reassemble and collect all of the media i still can while i still can. most of which requires special equipment that i may or may not have access too. no matter it can still be done. more importantly it requires time that i currently choose not to dedicate to it. basically it would end up as a scrap book of every thing with everything in its chronological place. so much easier said than done since i hardly ever date anything.
so what exactly does it contain?
zines and related – this includes all of the issues of the 2 major and 3 minor ones that i did plus items such as mail reviews taped interviews one-offs etc. i am pretty sure i still have most of this. i know i have several boxes correctly labeled as old zine mail. most of the zine originals which will have to be reproduced twice. once in full color to show how it all went together and once in b/w to show how it appeared. exceptions will have to be made on that though since there was some spot coloring and that required two separate layers to pull off. there are also various scraps of paper that have notes and such on them. whiteboards if you will.
audio tapes – i used to frequently carry a tape record with me and just let it go. various reasons for doing this but there are 25 or so tapes. a couple will require special treatment since they were recorded with a talkboy set on the wrong speed. there are maybe 10 or so more that are micro cassettes. this does not include the 5 or so answer machine tapes of my own or the 5 or so that i picked up at thrift stores though those 10 or so add to the final total along with the shultz tape, various loop tapes an a few other one of a kinds. my father has unknowingly been picking up my slack by adding stuff from some reels and cassettes he still has of me as a child. so there you have 50 plus audio tapes total
video tapes – there are maybe 20 each of vhs 8mm and dv8 of various and assorted things. there are also a few clips shot with digital cameras but those are the easy ones since there will be no encoding. this collection is constantly growing since i have a working video camera. and in the end this will be the most time consuming aspect of the whole thing since it all has to be done in real time. even better is that most are not marked at all or very simply so.
pictures pictures pictures – any and all of or buy me. loving the digital camera for this aspect of it.
portfolio – for lack of a better word. pictures or what have you of all of the things i have created over the years. the few things i have from my child hood up to the present and current items. this will cause the most overlap of any of the sections.
candyass execution and pedestrian landfill – all items relating to these non-projects. this will overlap heavily with audio tapes but they need their own section.
random scraps of paper – many many of them. some with names and numbers. some with random notes. some with little doodles and writings. should be filed alpha-numerically for the sake of ease.
the notebooks – every single content page of every single one. my notebooks have always been open and willing with a few exceptional rules 1) feel free to ask if you have a question about something in it but do it in a calm collect manner and dont be surprised if you get ten different answers in five days or just a shrug and ‘i don’t know’. 2) i know my writing looks like shit so i don’t want to hear about it. its not something i have much control over. its many notebooks of many pages of ideas information doodles quotes and whatever else.
blogs – all of them that are up and open and what ever else can be found.
the other stuff – whatever else come into the fold before the project gets done. simple enough.
why bother? because i or you may need this at some point as a reminder of what i was or wasn’t capable of. i have a brain that has a hair trigger self destruct switch as well as a few other defects. i don’t know what the next day brings (or the next minute often) and bad decisions often cause bad problems. and i was a bad one from the start. and yeah part of the reason for this is that if i don’t get it done (and you know i wont) someone else can take over. don’t all raise your hand at once. there will be no apologies.
as an aside...at what point do i become able to say published? letters section of the washington post, other zines, my zines...or something that actually pays?
