send me xmess cards! please!
ok with that out of the way this is that music post i said i would do. because "bob" knows i never post about music. 0_o
every once in a while the question comes up asking where i heard about said band or artist. or what is that i actually like. or whatever. so i grabbed a handful of somewhat random and atypical choices and will give you a run down of where it all came from and why you should listen to it. well maybe i will.
they might be giants - the link provided is to a site that has some mp3s for you to grab up. yes you can find some at their official site[1] but its easier to find at the linked site. i am starting with them since i mention them so much. i believe it was mc cliffy d that exposed me to them. i know i was in high school and it was when the first and self-titled album was the only one they had. i listened the hell out of that tape. i dont even bother listening to it anymore. i know it all by heart. i need to check and see if they had a track on one of the enigma variations comps.
a little side note about this is their is an appearance by eugene chadbourne. that was the first and last exposure most people have had to him. i did that part backwards. i already had one of his albums. i believe in my collection there are two records by him and one by camper van chadbourne which is him and camper van beethoven. i could take some guess on where that exposure came from but i would not put any money on it so im not going there. so there!
michael martin murphey - this is one of the artists k has repeatedly tried to get me to like. its your basic standard light country fare. hes not that bad if you like that kind of thing. its is the type of music that is best when mixed with xmess songs.[2] yes very good xmess songs.
the rainmakers - this is another one that k has repeatedly recommended. and at times she has help pushing them by mc cliffy d. they really remind me of green on red. a lot. and there is this guy that maybe you have heard of that goes by the name of stephen king that is apparently a fan of theirs. he has quoted them in a couple off books but i am not even going to try to look that up right now. they are even nice enough to put (free) mp3s on their website. i so love it when bands do that. and windows media files can suck it. or they too shall be converted.
mose allison - when i worked in the warehouse i would randomly ask some of my coworkers to recommended artists hoping to find some i had not heard of. this gave me random targets. well one coworkers by the name of bones recommended mose allison in one of these attacks. i knew ahead of time that most of the stuff coming from him would be jazz since that was what he listened to and played most.[3] so this is one of his recommendations.
greg brown - while looking for some stuff by mose allison using a popular p2p client a song called mose allison slept here by greg brown turned up so i figured i would give it a shot. as it turned out it was a pretty damn funny folkish song. so i did a little more looking and found a song called the marriage chant amongst amazons free mp3 downloads.[4] that song is not there anymore but there are three others there. gotta remember to download those later. and how bad can someone be that has performed on a prairie home companion?
thelonious monk - this was another recommendation by bones. i am sure i had heard of him prior to this but cant be sure. turns out my friend lainie is a big enough fan of his to name one of her sons monk. i am actually pretty sure that is where his name came from.
todd snider - i called a friend once and the cute (really. not sarcastically at all.) little outgoing message said something about reaching the residence of db cooper and amelia earhart.[5] about the same time there was a kid rock song being over played that had the line just like db cooper and the money he took. again i was surprised by what i didnt know. i had no idea who db cooper was. i fixed that pretty quick. so one day using a different p2p client i did a search for db cooper just to see what came up. well one of the results was for another folkish song by the same name. i liked what i heard so i downloaded a few more songs. it was worth the time though he gets points of for covering margaritaville.
the dresden dolls -
this was recently recommended by s. seems that they are going far and fast. which is good because they so totally rock. this is one band that i can only wish i get to see live some time because i bet they put on one hell of a show. and if you are curious as to what they sound like there are mp3s on their sight as well. take some time and go listen. and dont be afraid that the welcome page has the word punk in the title. they really arent. they are so much better than that. really this is art.
now anybody up for a hat trick?
the beatnigs - the first time i heard them was when the video for television played on some video show that ran on usa. i was really wondering about a video from a band on alternative tentacles actually being shown on tv.[6] especially one as political as that one is. i could not really believe it but it did get my attention. i am still after the single for that song. anyway shortly there after the alternative tentacles comp oops wrong stereotype came out and that had the song prewar america on it. wasnt too long before i went out and bought the tape. sure i probably could have gotten it for free but it was still worth the money.
disposable heroes of hiphoprisy - after the beatnigs broke up some of them became the disposable heroes of hiphoprisy. putting out a great debut album that i bought as soon as i found out who was responsible for it. again it was worth every cent. then they did the background music for the william s burroughs album spare ass annie and other tales so i had to buy that as well. and i even got that one on cd. no tears wasted. no sorrow no pity.
spearhead - after heroes broke up michael franti went on to form spearhead. the debut album home is one of the best album ever made. and i didnt even have to pay for it. i would have though. and i have paid for other stuff by them. i will admit that as each new album comes out it becomes more of a stretch to listen to them. not because they are bad but because the music is moving towards a more r&b feel which is not really to my liking. i will listen though just because franti kicks ass. and if anyone has a copy of his spot on def comedy jam send it to me. now. please.
if you think you would like to hear any of these but dont want to download a p2p client then maybe you might find a use for the alta vista audio search. i was surprised by the results it turned up.
and in case you missed it but dont see how since like 23555555555555555555 other people have posted about it already and about a month ago to boot...

[2] why arent there any good atheist xmess songs? aside from the whole reason for the season reason.
[3] i should probably state that t is the one responsible for getting me to listen to jazz and blues after much exposure to billy holiday and bessie smith as well as a few of similar artists. but mostly lady day.
[4] you guessed it. liquid audio can suck it too.
[5] that would be a very good story if it hasnt already been written. i love that message just for making me think about the two of them living happily ever after.
[6] i could be wrong about this. it could have actually been the heroes version that had the video but its the same song and its been how many years?
[7a] my mistake. this is what happens when i get tired of working on a post. thanks for pointing it out and it is now corrected. because no this post did not go live with that correction in it.
[7b] ok i didnt miss anything just messed up that one thing. i knew something like that was going to happen and that is exactly why i put that there. yes i am a big dork.
now did i miss anything in all of that? [7b]
