i had several long posts i was going to write but who the hell wants to hear my bullshit stories.

ok, i have requested packages from some people. i have sent packages to a lot of people. rather than explaining how they work and what they are over and over again, i am going to try to cover it once and for all. keep in mind all rules, rules for lack of a better word, are flexible and it is all open to options and expansions. it is a lot easier to show by example so at the bottom of this you will find just that.

really long post with images

how they started...
In high school, my fried Steve was having a birthday party. i was told on short notice and had already blown all of my lunch money on zine stuff. so i started thinkin about what to do while looking around my room. i started grabbing all of this stuff that i had but was no longer to attached to and started filling a box up. it didn't seem like much so i went for more. my younger sister was in the process of weeding stuff out so i grabbed what she would let me take. then mad a trip into the garage for a few other items. it still didn't seem like a great gift but after i handed it to him that changed. he was excited about it. someone said something about it being a gift that keeps on giving. the only thing i can actually remember being in there is wooden yo-yo, and i don't know why i remember that. anyway that is the basics on how they started.

what goes in (detail)...
when assembling a package it is best to have an idea of who it is for. this helps in figuring out what does and does not go into one. it is also better if the package actually tells something about you and where you live. most of these are sent amoung people in different states so the information is actually useful. for instance, almost every package i have assembled over the years has contained items from where every i am working at the time. sometimes as small as a few pieces of paper. other times an old uniform. most of it was stuff that was going to get tossed anyway. some packages have contained things from local fairs and/or those free real estate magazines from grocery stores and such. if the person has never been to your area this information can be very useful. also tourist pamphlets from hotels and information center serve the same pourpose.

you should always try to put a few new things in there. this does not mean you should go out a spend a lot of money. most of the stuff i put in was either bought specifically as gifts or came off a clearance rack somewhere. sometimes it was bought for other people who did not get it for some reason. sometimes it was bought for me and either i had one, was not interested in it or felt that s certian person might benifit better from it. as the sender you should also include something you have made. doesn't matter how big or small. could be a tape or cd. could be your masterpiece, as the sender it up to you who special it is, but it should be something of your own creation. a lot of the packages i receive from my sister (i got her hooked through getting revenge) have drawing or painting she has done. if you are not feeling creative or cannot think of anything that would fit the particular package, you still have an out. you could include a letter. most of the packages i send and receive do not contain letter, or any warning of their arrival, because in the end this is the easiest way out. but it is a good place to start for beginners.

another thing to consider is how big and compicated you are going to make it. because you are going to have to mail it at some point. for me smaller packes are harder to send because there is more though required in what goes into them. they are cheeper to send but considering that average shipping for me is around $15 you will realize i am not to good at smaller ones. one thing to keep in mind is that paper adds up quicker than random items. it stacks up all nice and pretty but gets heavy quickly. as for how complicated, some packages can be assembled almost over night. on the other hand, some have taken months before i am satisfied they good enough to ship. it may be different for you.

what goes in (simple suggestions)...
there will be some repition of the above but i would like to suggest some items you might want to include, and why. standards, if you will. but they are just suggestions. it's you package so it is up to you, but you can use this as a kind of cheat sheet. these are just basics though.
local iformation - probably more interesting to receiver that sender
receipts - actually tell a little about you
work stuff - because it tells about you.
your handiwork - because that is part of what it is all about
pictures - people always like pictures
veding machine toys - different regions have different items
new stuff - because you are probably sending this to someone you care about.
a letter - if you don't know aht else to put in that is you
confetti - because it's fun

what does not go in...
it is just as important to consider what not to include as what to. most of these might seem pretty basic but let's just say they have failed the test. food is generally bad, especially if you are unsure of when you are going to ship it. So forget about sending your left over fries or three month old White Castle. yeah it's funny but not enjoyed. Do not ship fireworks that are illegal in one state to a state where all fireworks are illegal. as a matter of fact, you should not try to send anything that the USPS considers restricted. keep that in mind when collecting items. also you might want to reconsider sending confetti to with a small child. that is shipable but could possible be messy and hazzardous.

now for the one very specific rule. you can never send someone an item back. if you do not want it, send it to someone else, but it can never be returned to it's original owner. it's for everyones safety. now that wasn't so bad was it?

other notes....
i do not mean to set rules for this at all. i also do not mean to imply that any package i have received is not up to par. i have loved every one and would like to get more. i refer to these as packages even though the term 'care packages from hell' might be better fittin to the mood they should convey. i used to refer to them as 'mail bombs' but my paranoia got the better of me. anyone got a better name for them?
one of the things i have always wanted to include was a shipping manifest but i do not have the patience for it. i just thought it would always be a nice touch to have a full list of the inventory and why it was included. if you want to do this, knock yourself out.
you can look at this from a few angles. you could consider a mail art project or creative recycling. or you just consider a special gift for a special friend. whatever works for you..
if the receiver pays enough attention they should be able to learn more about you and you current life than any letter would cover.
if you want to send me packages, please feel free. i do love getting them.
i don't think I missed anything but i will make changes as they are pointed out to me.

threat by example...
in going through richmackinRev Rich Mackin's LiveJournal, i saw that he was in the process of weeding out prior to moving out of Boston. i took this as an oppurtunity. i contacted him abou possibly receiving a package from him while he was at it. i did a quick explanation and the deal was done. the package i received was as good as any other one. since this was the most recent one i have actually received, i will let this one serve as an example. you may also want to take a look at the past two visual packages for example. i am not going to do a complete break down of this one because it is not mine to break down. the items shown are only a very small portion of the items included. as an added bonus, he stated that he enjoyed doing and might continue to.
