audio files - living the club life
we all know that music clubs are evil evil things. x number of cds for a penny sounds like a great deal until you factor in the small print. you have to by so many cds over the next few years and pay ridiculous shipping and fondling charges. canceling is not an option until you have met terms of the contract. the only way around this involves doing things that could very possibly lead to a series of crimal charges.
the selection of these clubs used to be sadly lacking in variety. this was improved by the expasion of available catalogs they could list on their web sites. i am not saying its as good as a good store but much better that the days of printed catalogs. and less waste as well. however this took a step backwards at the point that bmg and columbia house became part of the same company.
i love cheap music. however i got my lesson on these in junior high and have aviod them every sense. this was not the way to get more music for less. i figured hell would freeze over before i would ever join a music club. they are the main reason i never signed up for things like the sub pop or simple machinces singles clubs. you get what they send you and thats that.
well a few years ago bmg started your music.com. i read the small print. reread it. then read it again. with the exception of it being run by bmg it seemed to be acceptable enought to give it a shot. the main factor was not present in any words hidden or otherwise. there was no years long contract. you could join for a month or for the life of the concept. so i joined. and remain a member.
the basics are you go through and que up the cds they will send you each month at $6.99 per cd. it was $5.99 at the time i joined but it is still a reasonable price considering that price includes shipping and handling. i really love their use of a flat rate pricing plan. the price is per cd. if you find a two cd set you want it will cost you $13.98 a four cd set will cost $27.96 and etc. at that price two cds is still cheaper than most stores charge for a single cd.
because it is run by bmg the selection is still iffy but several times they have made hints that that limitation is caused by being unable to reach agreeable terms with the artist and or label. if you are looking for the latest top forty or country band you will most certianly find it here. when it comes to the more obsure acts it comes down to the label. no offspring. singles and the queen is dead are the only offerings from the smiths. 9 different titles available from the cure including join the dots plus a listing of numerous soundrtracks and complilations they appear on. 3 listing for trail of dead. i would suggest you browse the site before joining to see what is and ist there to see if it meets your personal needs.
join the dots is a good example here. as a four cd set it is $27.96 from yourmusic. new from amazon it is $32.97 with no shipping since it is over $25 and qualifies for supersaver shipping. from amazon sellers there are 53 available for $28.50 plus shipping charges. itunes has it availabe for $39.96. from rhino is is listed at $54.98. ok so its most expensive coming straight from the pachyderms mouth but still...
the queing is an interesting thing. you pick the tiles that are sent to you each month. you can only add single cds to your que but this includes many cds that are dual discs and a few that have bunos dics that are not consider part of the actual package for one reason or another. titles that are mutiple cds can only be order as seperate orders but still at the same flat rate pricing.
when i first singed up i added everything i could find that i wanted just to find out how that was handled. i was comforted by the fact that i was never told that my que was full and laughed when i looked at the list and it showed titles listed until something like may 2012. after a recent updating of seleions it is now set until july of that same year.
since joining i have recieved numerous emails telling me a title would not be available on the proposed ship date or was not longer available. this is too be expected since inventory turn over happens in any stores. supplies are always limited everywhere. i consider it a good thing that they notify you of these changes via email as well as on the page that lists your que.
a couple of negative factors are that there is no easy way to find if you have a cd queed more than once. this is likely to happen when you are spending any amount of time adding titles. and you really want to. if at any point your que becomes empty you still get charged and get nothing to show for it. no cd. no credit. but frankly if you cant keep up with it you should be there in the first place. i dont see many people having this problem happen but i get the feeling that those who do think it is not their own fault.
the fact that this is an auto debit subsciption may be a problem to some but for that you may want to join for only a month. join make your order(s) and then cancel. there are no adverse effects to doing this since long term membership is incouraged but not contractual. its just a pain in the butt o spend the time doing it but its still easy enough to do.
since monthly orders are sent wrapped in the typical crapass bmg cardboard wrap case cracking is a common problem. though i have never taken them up on it there encourage you to contact them for a replacemant if you receive your order with a cracked case and they make it easy to do so. now if i did this i would be contacting them after getting every second or third order. i appreciate the attempt to limit packaging enough that i wont bother. plus the fact that i have extras around.
i realize a lot of this sounds like i am trying to sell it and yeah i am. because it is a good deal. sure iy you happen to metion i refered you i would get free credit. but then you would have to know my yahoo address to do that [;-)] so i wont list it here. i have remained a member because they built a good plan and have maintained it without any major overhauls or annoying mailings. i fully expected to end up getting tons of mailing and emails from them a month. they do occasionally send them out plus a single sheet join the real music or movie club with every monthly shipping. it has never gotten to the point of excessive or annoying.
one of my main goals in life is to spend less on music so i can get more music and from my point of view this one is a help.
